Weekly workshop brings together students

Moving to a new country can be quite a daunting experience, but moving to study is an even more scary experience.

Canterbury is home to thousands of students, and houses three different universities each of which bring hundreds of different nationalities to the city yearly.

UKC, which has dubbed itself “The UK’s European university”, is the most popular university for international students. However it was students at Canterbury Christ Church University who took the first steps to create a "Global Cafe."

Global Café, which was created by members of the CCCU Christian Union and organised weekly by Beate Kaschner, said: “Our main intention in creating the event was so that students from all different origins don’t have any problems blending into their new surroundings.”

The café which has an original event every week, ranging from Salsa nights, to Romanian night.

Liang Zhou, 22, China, claimed: “When I first arrived in the UK, I was very nervous and a student representative told me that I should attend Global Café to meet other people in my situation.”

The Global Café that increases in size weekly is quickly becoming a popular event to all students, and not only international students. The fact that the workshop is completely free and consistent makes it an ever-appealing event.
