Lanterns launched at Chaucer Fields

Kent university students launched 300 lanterns to the Canterbury night sky in a protest against building taking place on Chaucer Fields.  Laura Kerrigan and Rebecca Dart investigate.

The green belt land has been set aside for a £60 million build, which includes a 150 room hotel, a conference centre, 800 student rooms and 200 car parking spaces.

Students are in uproar after being told that they could use the land to create a wildflower meadow back in 2009.

Jay Adams, who is part of the conservation society, said: “There are many other issues including the residents concerns with having 800 students, increased traffic and human walkways right on their doorstep.”

This proposal comes at the same time as protests over cuts to universities and strikes from university lecturers about pay and pension.

He says: “The university is already building 500 more rooms on campus and I don't believe that this development is necessary especially in this economic climate.

“The rooms that they are building will be more than the current on campus rooms and especially more than off campus houses. This development surely is not for students but for the universities profit.”

The planning application for the build is expected to be submitted to the council next month.
