Red Cross sets up in Canterbury to aid Japanese earthquake

Donation efforts for earthquake crisis come to Canterbury.

The Japanese earthquake and tsunami two weeks ago shocked the world, claiming thousands of lives and very nearly causing an international crisis.

The country has begun to heal, but the aid efforts are not limited to Japan alone.

Here in Canterbury there are plenty of ways to make a donation. Last week Red Cross took to Canterbury High Street to accept donations for relief work in Japan. Teams of people armed with donation buckets were on hand.

Lee Hyuang was one of the many who helped out. The Canterbury resident revealed that he had a brother and nephew in Tokyo at the time of the quake.

While both them and their belongings are safe Lee is still concerned.  He said: “It came as a big shock, I was set to go back in a week to see my family. In the end I decided it was better to stay here and help how I can.”

So far the street donations have raised around £500 for aid, “I’m happy with the results,” said Lee, “but we need people to keep giving.”
