Student struggle with Census

The census has been sent out this month however not everyone is filling it in and getting it sent off.

Canterbury council is urging for the census completion however with the many students in Canterbury this, what should be simple task, can sometimes be tricky.

For every one household that does not return the census the district will miss out on £5000 worth of funding over the 10 year census period.

This money is vital as it funds schools, hospitals, emergency services and roads.  Chief Executive, Colin Carmichael, said he hoped residents would take the time to complete the survey to get the maximum benefit for the district.

Some students are new to the process of filling out the census.  This year the council have now made it available to fill out the form online.  All you need to do is simply enter the code from the posted form.

Alice Wilkins, a Kent University student, said she filled in the form and found it very easy, where as Danny Hayward, a student from Christ Church University said: "I don't even know if we have had one posted yet".

Lauren Stratten, another Christ Church student, has an unusual living arrangement which proved difficult to complete the process.

Miss Stratten lives in a nine-bedroomed student house which use to be a bed and breakfast hotel.  When coming to fill in the form for the first time she saw that there were not enough boxes to fill in for the amount of people living in the household.

The form advised her to fill it out online. Lauren said: "I went to fill it out online but the code would not work online.  I think it can be hard for students...two of our housemates have gone home and they wont be back in time and we have to find out information about them but they're not actually here."

Listen to Lauren's full story and why she thinks its hard for students.

The census should be completed by 27 March.  The council are also offering workshops to help the public in filling out the forms.  Workshop locations and dates can be found HERE
